Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad today (2 September) expressed annoyance at lawmakers talking among themselves and using mobile phones inside the House, reminding them to maintain parliamentary decorum.
The Speaker made the remarks while members were speaking on urgent matters of public importance under Rule 71 of the Rules of Procedure during the parliament session.
He urged lawmakers to maintain discipline in the chamber and refrain from talking among themselves while another member speaks.
The Speaker’s irritation became evident when BNP reserved-seat MP Nipun Roy Chowdhury was seen talking in the chamber after the allotted two minutes for another member, Shaukat Ara Akter, ended.
Drawing Nipun Roy’s attention, he said, “Honourable Member Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Shaukat Ara’s two minutes have ended, while your conversation has not yet finished. There is a lobby nearby. Please go there and finish your conversation.”
Hafiz Uddin then specifically asked members not to use mobile phones inside the House.
“Please, do not use mobile phones here. There is a lobby nearby. Go there, finish your conversation and then come back,” he said.
The incident came during the Rule 71 proceedings, for which the Speaker said 61 notices were received. He accepted three of the notices for discussion.
Members who submitted the remaining notices were given two minutes each to raise their issues. A total of 30 minutes were allocated for the entire segment.
