Unidentified people attacked the Magura residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan last night (5 August), damaging several windowpanes, reports Prothom Alo.
The attack took place around 8:45pm at Shakib’s house in the Keshab Mor area of the district.
Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said bricks were hurled at the house, shattering several windowpanes.
No one was injured in the incident, he said, adding that police had been deployed and an investigation was underway.
The OC also said investigators initially suspected petrol had been poured on the main gate of the house and set alight. However, they found no evidence of a petrol bomb attack.
A relative of Shakib told Prothom Alo by phone that the extent of the damage could not be determined immediately. The relative also said an ailing family member was inside the house at the time of the attack.
Police officers stationed near the residence later in the evening declined to comment on the incident.
A video circulated on social media after the attack appeared to capture the sound of an explosion, although police had not verified its authenticity.
Shakib was elected from the Magura-1 constituency as an Awami League candidate in the 2024 general election.
He is also among the accused in a murder case filed with Dhaka’s Adabor Police Station over the death of a protester during the 2024 July Uprising.
The case, filed on 23 August 2024, names 156 accused, with Shakib listed as the 28th accused.
