Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman today (2 November) said it appears that conspirators and vested interest groups are exploiting the situation to provoke unrest in the readymade garment industry.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page this morning, Shafiqur urged the government to take a firm stance on the matter.
He also requested factory owners and workers to act with sincerity and remain vigilant.
He said, “Instability in the garment industry continues, with disturbing incidents of vandalism and arson at industrial establishments being reported in various areas.”
“Neither factory owners nor workers can establish their rights by destroying industrial facilities. We believe no worker would engage in such activities,” he added.
He further said, “Around 600 factories have already been declared closed. There are concerns that a deeper conspiracy may be at play to undermine the opportunities traditionally created for the garment industry ahead of the winter season. Such concerns cannot be ruled out.”
Readymade garment workers protesting over wages demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000 from the current Tk12,500. The protest intensified in Gazipur and Savar today (2 November), with several police vehicles set ablaze and vandalised, while cops fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters in Dhaka’s Mirpur.
Workers blocked two major highways in Gazipur and staged fresh street protests in Mirpur and Ashulia, demanding higher wages despite the government’s formation of a wage board.
