Seven galleries of the Jatiya Sangsad have been renamed after the seven Bir Sreshthas, Bangladesh’s highest military gallantry award recipients.
The move has been taken on the advice of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as a tribute to the nation’s bravest sons and deep respect for the Liberation War, said prime minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.
The newly named galleries are Bir Sreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Gallery, Bir Sreshtha Sepoy Hamidur Rahman Gallery, Bir Sreshtha Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Gallery, Bir Sreshtha Lance Naik Noor Mohammad Sheikh Gallery, Bir Sreshtha Engine Room Artificer Mohammad Ruhul Amin Gallery, Bir Sreshtha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Gallery and Bir Sreshtha Lance Naik Munshi Abdur Rouf Gallery.
Previously, the galleries were identified by generic or geographic names. With the renaming, each gallery has now been connected to the proud history of the 1971 Liberation War.
Officials concerned said the initiative will play an important role in conveying the spirit of the Liberation War among younger generations and strengthening respect for national heroes among visitors to Parliament.
Analysts noted that Liberation War history has visibly and institutionally been preserved through the installation of these nameplates in parliament.
