Police recovered the body of a 14-year-old schoolgirl from a crop field in Cumilla’s Lalmai upazila today (8 October).
Police recovered the body from a crop field near Manumura Jungle in Jagatpur Uttarpara of Perul Uttar Union.
The deceased was identified as Jannatul Tajmin, daughter of Abdul Alim of ChhatianTala area under Churamonkati Union in Jashore Sadar upazila. She was a seventh-grade student at Farida Vidyayatan in Cumilla city.
Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman said, “The body was sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.”
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and how she came to the location, the OC added. “An abandoned CNG-run auto-rickshaw was found beside the body.”
Local resident Tamal Banik said locals first noticed the auto-rickshaw near Manumura, beside the Kachikata-Harishchar Bazar road. They later found the girl’s body in a crop field about 50 yards from the road.
Tajmin’s father, Abdul Alim, said she left their rented home in Cumilla’s Race Course Dhanmondi area on 4 October, telling the family she was going to a female friend’s house. She later travelled to Cox’s Bazar with her friend.
According to the family, after returning, Tajmin spoke to her father by phone around 2am on Wednesday after getting off near Hotel Nurjahan in the Cumilla Bishwa Road area. The family lost contact with her afterwards.
Her mobile phone was later traced to the Lalmai police station area, after which the family learned that her body had been recovered from a field in Jagatpur.
