An autorickshaw driver arrested in connection with the rape and murder of 15-year-old schoolgirl Jannatul Tajmin in Cumilla’s Lalmai has confessed to the crime before a court.
The accused, Sumon, gave a confessional statement before Judge Mominul Haque of Court No 6 of the Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at around 3:30pm on Saturday (10 October). He was later sent to Cumilla District Jail at 7:20pm, said Sadequr Rahman, police inspector at the court.
According to police, Suman picked up Tajmin in his autorickshaw on Wednesday night (7 October), promising to take her home from the Padua Bazar Bishwa Road area for a fare of Tk300. He took her to a cropland in Lalmai, where he raped and killed her.
Suman switched off Tajmin’s iPhone in Cumilla after the killing and fled to Chattogram. He was arrested on Friday. Based on information provided by him, police later recovered the phone from a wooded area in the Bakhrabad area.
Tajmin’s body was recovered on Thursday morning from a cropland in Jagatpur village under Perul North Union of Lalmai upazila.
Tazmin was an irregular Class Seven student at Farida Bidyayatan High School in Cumilla city. Her family is from Jashore, and she lived with them in the city’s Racecourse area.
