The deadline for the investigation report in the Sagar-Runi murder case has been pushed back to 9 December for the 131st time.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam set the new date after a hearing today (5 November).
The investigation agency, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), failed to submit the report on the scheduled date, prompting the court to set a fresh deadline, sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Division confirmed.
On 11 February 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were murdered at their rented apartment in West Rajabazar in the capital.
Sagar was the news editor of private television channel Maasranga TV, while Runi was a senior reporter at ATN Bangla. Following the killings, Runi’s brother, Nowsher Alam Roman, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The accused are Rafiqul Islam, Bokul Mia, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Islam alias Arun, Abu Sayeed, and two security guards at the couple’s residence, Palash Rudra Pal and Enayet Ahmed, along with their friend Tanvir Rahman Khan.
Tanvir and Palash are out on bail, while the remaining accused are in jail.
The couple’s four-and-a-half-year-old son, Mahir Sarowar Megh, was at home when the murders took place.
The case was initially investigated by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The investigation was later handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch before the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) took charge.
On 30 September last year, the High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from RAB to a high-powered task force to be formed through the Ministry of Home Affairs.
A High Court Division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam issued the order, directing the task force to investigate the murders.
On 23 October, the government formed a four-member task force in line with the High Court’s directive. The head of the PBI was appointed convener of the task force.
