Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman today (28 April) said the number of Rohingya who have taken shelter in Bangladesh after being displaced from Myanmar is currently around 11.89 lakh.
The minister shared this information in response to a written question from Sylhet-6 MP Emran Ahmed Chowdhury in parliament.
The minister said, “According to a 13 April report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the total number of Rohingya currently residing in Bangladesh after fleeing Myanmar stands at 11,89,213 individuals (approximately 11.89213 lakh).”
Khalilur reiterated that the government’s clear position is that the only sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis is their safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation.
He added that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, diplomatic initiatives are ongoing to ensure the swift return of the Rohingya to their homeland based on mutual understanding.
The minister further said, “In line with the election manifesto, we have undertaken multifaceted diplomatic efforts and continue regular engagement with the international community to achieve a sustainable resolution to the crisis.”
He also noted that Bangladesh is providing moral and diplomatic support to international judicial processes aimed at ensuring justice for the Rohingya crisis, particularly the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice.
Referring to the genocide case filed against Myanmar, he said it is currently at a critical stage.
“Written and oral hearings have already been completed with participation from several countries, and a verdict is expected soon,” Khalilur added.
