In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the initial two seasons were produced back-to-back.
Due to this — given the scale the Prime Video series has been developed — it was taxing for the production team, admitted Patrick McKay, who is co-showrunner of the show.
“I think our goal for Season 3 is really to blow the doors off the hinges,” he told IGN.
That said, season three was shot without the baggage of another season, as McKay shared that season 3 will, in some way, set off a whole new story.
“We’re really proud of Seasons One and Two, but for us, now, in some ways, we’re starting a whole new story. This is turning the page on the show.”
That doesn’t mean the showrunners are axing the events of the first two seasons; rather, season three can be perceived as a soft reboot.
“Hopefully, this season is a great jumping-on point for fans,” he said, adding, “And it truly starts with people talking about the One Ring.”
Meaning, season three will take viewers into a five-year time jump while a stronger focus will be on Sauron and his efforts to forge the One Ring.
“We really love the idea of throwing the viewer in a way that is a completely fresh start. J.D. Payne, my co-showrunner, and I are huge admirers of shows that have done this kind of [time jump] before, like Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire. That can be really fun for a viewer.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will release on Nov. 11.
