Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Mahdi Amin has said that respecting dissenting views and upholding freedom of expression are fundamental to strengthening democracy.
He made the comment in the context of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s order to release a schoolteacher detained in Daulatpur, Kushtia, over allegations of making derogatory remarks about the premier.
Describing the incident in a post shared on his verified Facebook page last night (30 September), Mahdi Amin said, “Tensions arose among local students, guardians and residents in Daulatpur, Kushtia, centring on derogatory and offensive remarks made by a schoolteacher in the classroom regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.”
Following protests on the school premises, police detained the teacher and took him to the police station, he said.
Mahdi Amin said that, after being informed of the incident, the prime minister was concerned and immediately instructed the relevant police station to release the teacher with dignity and ensure his safe return home.
Following the prime minister’s directives, police subsequently escorted him safely to his residence.
Highlighting the prime minister’s perspective, Mahdi Amin said the prime minister believes that differences of opinion are natural, as every individual has their own viewpoint and opinions.
“Even if one disagrees with someone’s opinion, their right to express it should be respected. This respect for dissenting opinion and freedom of expression is the strength of democracy,” he said.
He further noted that the prime minister believes a culture of positive behaviour, mutual respect and coexistence will strengthen society.
