Saiful Islam, station officer at the Kalagachhia outpost under the Sundarbans Satkhira Range, said local residents had rescued the turtle and handed it over to the Forest Department.
“The turtle is currently in our custody. Further action will be taken in accordance with the decision of the higher authorities,” he said.
“It is a rare species of turtle. However, I cannot identify the exact species at this moment as I do not have that information,” he added.
According to locals, a fisherman from the Sheikh Bari area of Kholpetua village under the coastal Gabura union had cast his net in the Kholpetua River for fishing yesterday when the turtle became entangled in it. He later took the turtle to his home.
After news of the incident spread in the village, locals went to the fisherman’s house and rescued the rare turtle.
They later handed it over to the Kalagachhia outpost of the Forest Department through members of the Community Patrol Group. The turtle is estimated to weigh around 10 kilogrammes.
