A Sylhet court will tomorrow (29 October) deliver its verdict in the 2020 case over the custodial death of Raihan Ahmed at Bandar Bazar police outpost, but five of the six accused, including the prime accused and then-sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, are absconding.
The verdict will be announced at 2pm at the Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, said Public Prosecutor Advocate Mohammad Muminul Islam Momin. He said five of the six accused are on the run.
According to court sources, prime accused Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, then a sub-inspector, secured bail from the High Court on 4 August and was released from jail on 10 August. Although the bail was later stayed, he did not surrender to the lower court and remains absconding.
Raihan, 34, died on 11 October 2020 after being taken to the Bandar Bazar police outpost under Sylhet Metropolitan Police and allegedly tortured overnight on 10 October.
His wife filed a case under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act. An investigation later found evidence of torture, while several police personnel were suspended or withdrawn from duty following the incident.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested three accused, including constable Harun. Akbar was arrested near the Kanaighat border on 9 November 2020.
The PBI submitted a charge sheet against six people on 5 May 2021. The accused are Akbar, assistant sub-inspector Ashik Elahi, constable Harunur Rashid, constable Titu Chandra Das, sub-inspector Hasan Uddin, and journalist Abdullah Al Noman, a relative of Akbar. The trial began on 30 September 2021.
