A member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was killed after being stabbed by an alleged drug dealer in Sylhet city today (22 May).
The deceased was identified as Emon Acharya, a member of RAB-9.
The incident took place around noon near Keane Bridge in Sylhet city, confirmed Md Monjurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
He said the attacker was not a mugger but an alleged drug dealer.
The police official added that several people were consuming and selling drugs near Keane Bridge when police chased them after spotting the activity.
“As the suspected drug dealers attempted to flee, RAB member Emon, who was in plain clothes at the scene, caught hold of one of them. The accused immediately stabbed him,” he said.
Police later detained the accused, identified as Asadul Alam Bappy, from the scene immediately after the incident.
According to RAB-9 sources, Emon was critically injured in the stabbing attack and was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
