Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (1 October) urged people to install solar systems at their homes, offices and other establishments wherever possible to promote renewable energy and benefit both the country and individuals.
“I would request everyone to install solar or renewable energy systems at your respective homes, offices and courts wherever possible. It will be good for the country and beneficial for you as well,” he said.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while inaugurating the supply of electricity to the national grid for the first time in the country from a rooftop solar project at the Zila Parishad Dak Bungalow in Fulgazi.
The rooftop solar system installed at government offices in Fulgazi, Parshuram and Chhagalnaiya upazilas of the district have a combined generation capacity of 962.5 kilowatts, or nearly one megawatt.
The electricity generated from the system will first meet the respective government institutions’ own demand, while surplus power will be supplied to the national grid.
Sharing a personal example, Tarique Rahman said he is also installing a fully solar-based power system at his residence.
“At my home, the electricity I need is coming entirely from solar power, and a lithium battery will be installed there within the next few days. Once the lithium battery is installed, I will be able to rely on solar power 24 hours a day,” he said.
According to the sources, solar panels have been installed at eight government establishments in Fulgazi upazila, including the Upazila Parishad building, dak bungalow and six Union Parishad complexes.
In Chhagalnaiya upazila, solar panels have been installed at 12 establishments, including the Upazila Parishad building, municipality building, dak bungalow and rooftops of UP complexes.
In Parshuram upazila, solar panels have been installed at six establishments, including the Upazila Parishad building, auditorium building, three UP complexes and dak bungalow.
Some 415kw electricity is supposed to be generated in Chhagalnaiya upazila, while 298kw in Parshuram and 249kw in Fulgazi.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Muhuri-Kohua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project and exchanged greetings with local people in Parshuram.
He later joined a tree plantation programme at Begum Khaleda Zia Women’s College in Fulgazi and attended a programme at Fulgazi Government Pilot High School ground to distribute Family Cards and Farmer Cards and provide honorariums to people working at various religious institutions.
