Employees of DL Filling Station in Uttara were allegedly robbed of Tk1.21 crore at gunpoint while they were on the way to a bank to deposit the money today (9 August).
The incident occurred around 10:30am in front of Crown Plaza on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the Airport area.
Six to seven unidentified robbers riding three motorcycles intercepted the employees’ covered van, allegedly assaulted the employees and fled with Tk1 crore 21 lakh 25 thousand in cash.
Confirming the matter to TBS, Mirza Tarek Ahmed Beg, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Uttara Division, said, “”We are trying to identify those involved in the incident. There has been some progress, but we cannot disclose details at this stage in the interest of the investigation.”
Following the incident, the filling station manager Md Abdul Karim filed a case with Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Airport Police Station against six to seven unidentified people.
According to the case statement, Assistant Manager Mohammad Al Amin, along with CNG operator Selimuzzaman and covered-van driver Md Khorshed, was transporting the money to Pubali Bank in Sector 1 of Uttara.
When the van reached the road in front of Crown Plaza near the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority lane around 10:30am, three motorcycles carrying the alleged robbers came from behind and blocked the vehicle.
One of the robbers allegedly pointed a pistol at Al Amin’s chest and snatched the bag containing Tk1 crore 21 lakh 25 thousand.
The robbers also allegedly attacked Al Amin with a machete, injuring him.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Haman Talukder said police were conducting drives to arrest those involved.
