Pallabi Police ASI arrested with 5,310 yaba pills in Uttara

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Pallabi Police Station has been arrested with 5,310 yaba pills in the capital’s Uttara area.

The arrested officer is Md Shafiqul Islam, 43. Police also arrested Wasim, 24, who was allegedly accompanying him, said Dakshinkhan Police Station Sub-Inspector Bakhtiar Hossain.

They were arrested during separate raids in Uttara on Sunday night (23 August) following information that a group was involved in yaba trafficking.

Police first raided the Azampur Kacha Bazar area and detained Wasim when he allegedly tried to flee after noticing police. Officers recovered 50 yaba pills from him, SI Bakhtiar said.

Based on information obtained from Wasim, police later raided a rented flat and arrested ASI Shafiqul with 200 yaba pills.

Police subsequently raided another flat at Noor Building No 67 in Bismillah Palli, Azampur Kacha Bazar, and recovered another 5,110 yaba pills, bringing the total seizure to 5,310 pills.

SI Shahinur Rahman, the investigating officer, said a case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act yesterday (24 August), naming the two arrested men and two to three unidentified people.

The two suspects were produced before a court, which ordered them to be sent to jail, he added.

According to the case statement, the suspects told police during initial interrogation that they collected yaba from different parts of the country and sold the pills in Dakshinkhan and nearby areas.

Md Emdadul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Pallabi Police Station, said he was aware of Shafiqul’s arrest and that the ASI had been irregular in performing his duties at the station.
