Police suspect a possible retaliatory motive behind the public shooting of Hasan Raju in Roufabad, Bayezid in Chattogram city, linking the incident to the killing of Nasir Uddin in Raozan.
A 12-year-old girl, Reshmi Akter, was also injured and is receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place around 9:30pm yesterday (7 May) in Bashbaria Bihari Colony under Roufabad in Bayezid Bostami Police Station, near the Shaheed Minar area on the Murradpur-Oxygen Road.
According to police and local sources, five to six masked assailants chased Raju while shouting to catch him and opened indiscriminate fire.
As he tried to flee, he collapsed after being shot, before the attackers approached, shot him in the head and fled, police added.
Residents said many came out after hearing gunshots in the narrow, densely populated lane but did not intervene due to fear.
Local resident Farida Akter said, “I came out after hearing screams and saw armed men chasing Raju. Moments later, I heard continuous gunfire and saw him lying injured as the attackers fired at him from close range.”
She added that a child was later found injured inside the alley and taken to hospital.
Police said the attack appears premeditated, suspecting trained shooters carried it out after confirming the victim’s location.
OC Abdul Karim said the killing likely stems from prior enmity.
“The matter is under investigation. No case has been filed and no arrests have been made so far,” he said.
Police sentRaju’s body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem.
Nasir Uddin was shot dead in Kadalpur, Raozan, on 26 April.
Police said Nasir, a returnee migrant worker and Jubo Dal activist, had prior links to the case, with his daughter earlier accusing Raju, though no case was filed.
Investigators are also probing possible involvement of fugitive criminal Mohammad Raihan, a close associate of Nasir and linked to multiple murder cases.
Originally from Kadalpur in Raozan, Raju had been staying in Roufabad for a few days to visit his sister.
His family has demanded exemplary punishment for the killers.
