Faridpur district police Detective Branch (DB) Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Md Alamgir Hossain has been withdrawn from his post, according to an official order issued today (23 June).
The move comes after the death of Chhatra League activist Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on 21 June, a day after he was taken into DB custody.
The order, signed by Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md Nazrul Islam, states that Alamgir was being withdrawn from the DB’s Faridpur Sadar Zone for administrative reasons.
He was instructed to report to Faridpur Police Lines by 1pm on 23 June. The order took immediate effect.
Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Fatema Islam said the decision had been taken for administrative reasons and that the officer had already been attached to the Police Lines.
Pranto, a resident of the Paschim Gondardiya area of Madhukhali municipality and a student of Faridpur Law College, was reportedly detained by DB police on 20 June.
According to his family, he was assaulted in front of his mother at the time of his detention. They also alleged that he was beaten after being taken into custody.
