Professor Md Nurul Islam of Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Geography and Environment has been appointed vice-chancellor of the university.
The appointment was announced in a notification issued today (26 September) by Md Sultan Ahmed, deputy secretary of the Public General University Branch of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, with the approval of the president and chancellor.
According to the notification, Prof Nurul Islam has been appointed to the post after being relieved of his position as vice-chancellor of Dhaka Central University.
The appointment was made under Section 11(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.
His tenure will be four years from the date of joining or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever comes earlier.
He will receive other benefits attached to the post according to the rules and, as the university’s chief executive officer, will reside permanently on the university campus.
The notification also said the president and chancellor may cancel the appointment at any time if deemed necessary.
Previously, Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan was appointed vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University on 5 September 2024.
A professor in the university’s Department of Philosophy, he was appointed temporarily under Section 11(2) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973, with the approval of the president and chancellor.
