Not suppressing dissent, but welcoming different views should be new political culture: Jamaat’s Shafiqur

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said media freedom is the foremost condition for a healthy democracy.

“Media freedom is the foremost condition for a healthy democracy. Rather than suppressing dissent, welcoming different views should be the new political culture,” said Dr Shafiqur in a Facebook post today (19 February).

He also said, “July stands for freedom of expression. During 17 years of fascism, both the current ruling party and we were subjected to repression when it came to freedom of expression. 

“We do not want to return to that dark period,”
