A 78-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a motorbike in Dhaka’s Demra area today (4 May).
The deceased, Dolimun Nessa of Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur, was hit from behind while crossing the Boro Bhangha Mahakash Bypass road, according to her son Mohammad Sorhab.
She was rescued in critical condition and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, said the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy as no complaint was filed.
In Tangail, two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a truck and a pickup van on the Dhaka–Tangail highway.
The accident occurred in the Ravna bypass area today, said Mohammad Sharif, officer-in-charge of the Elenga Highway Police Outpost.
He said the truck, heading towards Jamuna Bridge, collided with the pickup van on the flyover, leaving two dead on the spot.
Meanwhile, five people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Sunamganj today.
Four of the victims died in Chhatak upazila when a passenger bus collided with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Sunamganj–Sylhet highway around noon.
One of the deceased was identified as Yusuf Ali, 55, of Tahirpur upazila, while the identities of the others could not be confirmed, said Abdul Motaleb, officer-in-charge of Joykolosh Highway Police Station.
Police said two victims died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital. The injured were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where at least two remain in critical condition.
In a separate incident on the Dirai-Madanpur road, an unidentified woman, aged around 40, was killed after being run over by a speeding bus while crossing the road.
Meanwhile, the death toll from a truck-pickup collision in South Surma upazila of Sylhet has risen to nine after another victim died during treatment.
The crash occurred on Sunday morning on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway when a pickup carrying construction workers collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
Police said several workers were killed on the spot, while others died later at hospitals. Authorities have seized the vehicles involved and launched an investigation, suspecting driver fatigue as a possible cause.
Officials also noted that a similar accident in the same area in 2023 had killed 13 construction workers, raising concerns over recurring crashes on the route.
