Police rescued a four- to five-day-old baby girl from a black polythene bag beside a road in the capital’s Mirpur area yesterday evening (23 September) after a caller reported to the national emergency helpline 999 that a baby was crying inside the bag.
Confirming the matter, Anwar Sattar, police inspector and media and public relations officer of the National Emergency Service 999, said a man called the emergency helpline that evening to report that a newborn had been left inside a black polythene bag at an empty plot on Road 8 in Block D of Shah Ali.
The caller said the baby was crying loudly inside the bag and sought urgent assistance.
Following the alert, the 999 control room informed Shah Ali Police Station, and a team was sent to the spot. The call was received by 999 call-taker Mohammad Sahel Khan, while 999 police dispatcher ASI Mohammad Masum Billah coordinated the rescue with the police station.
Police reached the spot and rescued the baby alive. She was first taken to Shishu Hospital for treatment.
As her condition was critical, she was given preliminary treatment there before being transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted.
Shah Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahangir Alam confirmed the rescue and the baby’s admission to 999 authorities, Anwar said.
The baby’s identity and who left her there were not immediately known. Police are working to establish the baby’s identity and identify those who left her there.
