Newly appointed Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain has pledged to transform what he described as a neglected Jhinaidah district into a model of development.
He made the commitment during views-exchange meetings held after joining office with members of civil society, politicians, journalists, government officials and employees, and people from different professions.
As part of his immediate priorities, he instructed law enforcement agencies and other relevant bodies in the district to maintain a zero-tolerance stance against drugs.
During the meetings, he said those involved in the drug trade would be brought under the law and given strict punishment, regardless of how influential they were.
He also said important points and alleys across the town, including Payra Chattar, Arappur, Hamdah, Modern Mor, the truck terminal, bus terminal, Shaheed Minar area, Chuadanga bus stand and T Bazar, would gradually be freed from encroachment.
In addition, he said public toilets for men and women would be built immediately at important points in the town to reduce public suffering.
The deputy commissioner also warned that steps would be taken to curb the activities of middlemen and control corruption at different government offices and institutions, including the court premises, Jhinaidah Sadar Hospital, passport office, BRTA office, land office and sub-registrar’s office.
He further said measures would be taken to stop the illegal cutting of soil from arable land and its conversion, prevent the sale of soil to brick kilns, stop the felling of government trees, reduce corruption in public offices and make union parishad activities more dynamic.
Seeking cooperation from people of all classes and professions, Noman Hossain said collective support would be needed to reshape the district.
Locals said that if these initiatives were implemented, Jhinaidah town could gradually develop into a planned and model urban centre.
