A man accused in a murder case was hacked and beaten to death by unidentified assailants in Cumilla’s Titas upazila last night (11 May).
The deceased was identified as Abdul Latif Bhuiyan, 45, son of late Dhonu Bhuiyan.
The incident took place in Manik Kandi village of the upazila. Police recovered a pistol and two rounds of bullets from the possession of the deceased.
Titas Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Momirul Haque confirmed the matter this afternoon (12 May).
He said police recovered the victim in a critically injured condition after receiving information through emergency service 999.
Latif was first taken to the Titas Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Pangu Hospital) in Dhaka, where he died while undergoing treatment.
According to police and local sources, a long-standing dispute over local dominance and personal enmity existed between the followers of former union parishad chairman Abul Hossain Molla and those of Saiful Member in the Manik kandi area.
Abul Hossain Mollah’s son and local Jubo League leader Md Zahirul Islam Mollah was killed in a clash linked to the same rivalry on 6 December 2022.
Latif was an accused in that murder case and had returned to the locality only three days ago after being released on bail.
The OC said multiple police units are working on the ground to uncover the motive behind the killing.
“Our operations to arrest those involved are ongoing. However, the victim’s family is yet to file a formal case at the police station,” he added.
