A month-long breast cancer awareness campaign began in Chattogram today (1 October), with a procession and awareness activities aimed at promoting early detection and women’s health.
The campaign is a joint initiative of Chattogram City Corporation, private healthcare institution CSCR and PGS Academia, a postgraduate surgical education and training institute.
Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain inaugurated the programme at 11am on the premises of Chattogram Medical College. He later led a procession through several major city streets before returning to the starting point.
Speaking at the event, the mayor thanked the organisers and said women’s health was a collective responsibility.
He stressed the need for broader public participation and coordinated efforts to make Chattogram a “Breast Cancer Aware City”.
As part of the “Pink October” campaign, he urged residents to keep a pink light illuminated at their homes or businesses as a symbol of solidarity with breast cancer awareness and women’s wellbeing.
Among those who joined the procession were Chattogram Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Omar Faruk Yusuf, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain, Dainik Purbokone Editor Dr M Ramizuddin Chowdhury, Chattogram Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Taslim Uddin and Chattogram Medical College Acting Principal Prof Anisul Hossain.

A Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) double-decker “Pink Bus” drew attention at the end of the procession. The bus will provide mobile breast cancer screening services in different parts of the city every Saturday in October, from 3pm to 6pm, under the supervision of specialist surgeons.
Meanwhile, CSCR at Prabortak Mor will offer free breast cancer screening and counselling for women throughout October, from 3pm to 6pm.
