Mohammadpur office attacked, vandalised over land dispute

An office in Mohammadpur’s Chand Udyan Housing area in Dhaka was attacked and vandalised this morning (26 September) amid a dispute over ownership of a plot of land, police said.

The incident took place around 11am at an office on the disputed plot near Rose Villa, west of the Beribadh under Mohammadpur Police Station.

CCTV footage of the incident, circulated on social media, shows a group of people breaking the lock of a room in the office and entering it. They were also seen taking away various items from inside, according to the footage.

Police sources said around 150–200 people took part in the incident.

According to police, the land had been under the possession of an individual named Alam. A group led by Jony and Rezaul allegedly arrived at the site in the morning, broke down the existing tin fencing and entered the office on the property.

They allegedly vandalised the office and then erected new tin fencing around the plot in an attempt to take possession of the land.

Police later went to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim said the incident stemmed from a dispute over ownership of the land.

“An attempt to take possession of a plot took place in the Beribadh area on Saturday morning. After receiving the information, we sent police personnel to the scene and brought the situation under control,” he said.

“There is a dispute over ownership of the land. We have told the parties to go to court. Whoever gets the court’s verdict in their favour will be able to take possession of the land,” he added.
