‘Misleading’ posts about chief whip: Content creator Nasim granted bail

A Dhaka court today (21 April) granted bail to content creator AM Hasan Nasim in a case filed over allegedly spreading misleading information about Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order on a bond of Tk1,000 after hearing arguments from both prosecution and defence.

Sub-inspector Moktar Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Department confirmed the matter.

During the hearing, defence lawyer Zahidul Islam sought bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to Nasim.

Earlier, law enforcement officials arrested Nasim on 17 April from his rented residence at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital.

The following day, the court rejected both remand and bail petitions and sent him to jail.

According to the case statement, the allegations stem from a Facebook post made on 11 April, which contained misleading and defamatory content about Barguna-2 lawmaker and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni.

The post was allegedly intended to blackmail the chief whip. The same account was later published and circulated, further misleading information at different times.

Screenshots were later sent to the chief whip’s personal WhatsApp number from an unidentified account in an attempt to blackmail him for financial gain.

Following the incident, Md Nazrul Islam, a supporter of the chief whip, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station under the Cyber Security Ordinance.
