A court in Kishoreganj today (28 September) sentenced a man to death for stabbing his wife to death in Bajitpur upazila in 2016.
Supriya Rahman, judge of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1, handed down the verdict.
The convict, Ismail alias Sagar Mia, son of the late Ayet Ali of Uttar Sararchar village in Bajitpur upazila, was tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, Ismail had allegedly subjected his wife, Jharna Akter, 27, to physical and mental abuse since their marriage.
On the evening of 12 April 2016, an altercation broke out between the couple while Jharna was cooking at her father’s house.
At one stage, Ismail stabbed her with a knife, leaving her critically injured.
Family members rushed Jharna to Bhagalpur Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Following the incident, Jharna’s mother Zahera Begum filed a case with Bajitpur Police Station.
