A Dhaka court today (17 October) sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a child.
Judge Munshi Moshier Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, confirmed Ershad Alam, a lawyer representing the prosecution.
The court also fined Kamrul, the convicted man, Tk50,000. In default of payment, he will serve an additional year in prison without hard labour.
Ershad said an arrest warrant has been issued for Kamrul as he was still absconding at the time the verdict was delivered.
The court also directed the Dhaka district magistrate or collector to recover the fine by selling the accused’s movable and immovable property and hand the proceeds to the victim’s family.
According to the case statement, the child was visiting its maternal grandparents’ home in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, with their parents. Around 11:30am on 15 March 2018, the child was playing in front of the grandparents’ house when Kamrul allegedly lured it into his room by offering money to buy a treat.
He offered the child Tk10 and promised better food before abusing the child sexually.
The child raised its voice out of fear, prompting its mother and maternal grandparents to rush to the room and ask Kamrul to open the door. When he did not comply, they broke through the tin partition of the room and rescued the child.
After hearing the child’s account, local residents were informed. They detained and beat Kamrul before turning him over to the police. The case was subsequently filed at South Keraniganj Police Station over the abuse.
