A Dhaka court has placed Arman Uddin Siddiq on a five-day remand in a case over the seizure of 1,290 grammes of gold paste worth Tk1.74 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order today (9 October) after a hearing on a police petition seeking 10 days’ remand for questioning.
Sub-Inspector Anichur Rahman of Airport Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, produced Arman before the court. Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution division confirmed the development.
According to the case complaint, Arman, 36, arrived in Dhaka from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight on 8 October.
Acting on a tip-off, a customs preventive team placed him under surveillance at the airport. After he completed immigration formalities and reached baggage belt 2, customs officials searched him on suspicion.
During the search, officials found three egg-shaped packets wrapped in white adhesive tape concealed in his rectum. The packets contained 24-carat gold paste, according to the complaint.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said each packet contained 430 grammes of gold paste, bringing the total seizure to 1,290 grammes.
Refining the seized paste could yield around one kilogramme of pure gold, the NBR said, estimating the market value of the recovered material at Tk1.74 crore.
Assistant Revenue Officer HM Mamun Kaisar of the customs department filed the case with Airport Police Station over the seizure.
