A Bangladeshi man lost his left foot in a landmine explosion near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari today (28 July), according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident occurred around noon near Aga area, between border pillars 47 and 48 in the Jaruliachhari area of Naikhongchhari Sadar union, said Lt Col Md Faizul Kabir, commanding officer of BGB’s Naikhongchhari 11 Battalion.
The injured man was identified as Abdul Karim, 40, son of Mokbul Hossain of Jaruliachhari in Ward No 7 of Naikhongchhari Sadar Union.
Quoting local residents, the BGB commander said Karim’s family-owned cattle had strayed across the border into Myanmar.
While attempting to retrieve them, he reportedly crossed about 500 metres inside Myanmar from the zero line, where he triggered a landmine, he said.
The explosion severed his left leg below the knee, he added.
Local residents rescued Karim and took him to Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex. As his condition was critical, he was later referred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
The latest incident comes a month after another Bangladeshi, Shafiul Alam, was killed in a landmine explosion along the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari on 24 June.
According to local authorities, at least four people have been killed and more than 30 others injured in landmine explosions along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border over the past year.
