A 55-year-old man was killed while trying to save a 10-year-old boy who was about to be hit by the Cox’s Bazar-bound Parjotak Express in Chattogram’s Sholoshahar area today (11 September).
The accident occurred around 1:45pm near the railway crossing beside Chashma Mosque, close to Sholoshahar Railway Station.
The deceased, Delwar Hossain Mintu, was an electrician and lived in the Tulatali area of Chattogram’s East Nasirabad. His ancestral home is in Feni.
According to police and locals, repair work has been going on for a long time on the road beside the railway tracks, making it difficult for pedestrians to use. As a result, many people use the area beside the railway line instead of the road.
Rahat, son of Mohammad Faruk and a resident of the No 2 Gate area of Panchlaish, was walking near the railway tracks when the Parjotak Express suddenly approached.
Delwar went forward to move the boy away from danger. In trying to save him, Delwar fell under the train and died on the spot.
Rahat’s right hand and right leg were severed in the accident. He was rescued and taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in Ward 26.
Confirming the matter, Sholoshahar In-charge Sub-Inspector Asim Dhar told The Business Standard that Rahat was seriously injured and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
“Legal proceedings are underway over Delwar’s death,” he added.
