An unidentified man suspected of theft, was tied to a tree and beaten overnight in Fatikchhari, Chattogram, resulting in his death, police said.
His body was recovered yesterday afternoon (23 April) from the yard of a house in Suabil Union in Fatikchhari.
According to police, the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is working to identify the body.
A bicycle was also recovered from the scene, which authorities believe may be linked to the incident.
Locals said they spotted the body in the courtyard of a house in the Hajirkhil area under Ward 8 of Suabil Union and informed the police.
Later, officers from Bhujpur Police Station arrived and recovered the body.
Union Parishad Member Md Mamun said he reached the spot around 9am after being informed by police and found the body in the courtyard.
He said, “The house owner Mainuddin, his brother, a domestic worker named Selim and two others were taken to the police station for questioning.”
Bhujpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bipul Chandra Dey told The Business Standard that preliminary findings suggest the man was tied to a tree and beaten throughout the night by locals on suspicion of theft, which led to his death.
The OC said, “The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after investigation and interrogation. Legal process is underway. Those detained will be shown arrested once a case is filed.”
In a previous similar incident in the same police station area, a man named Nurul Absar died after being beaten during a village arbitration over theft allegations.
His brother Rasel was also seriously injured in the incident that took place around 4pm on 4 April in Khondkar Para of Dantmara Union under Bhujpur Police Station in Fatikchhari.
They were taken to Nazirhat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Nurul Absar dead.
Rasel is currently undergoing treatment.
Both brothers, Nurul Absar and Rasel, sons of Nabidur Rahman, were local residents.
