Chattogram district Detective Police (DB) have arrested Md Sabbir Hossain Sunny, an alleged associate of “Boro Sazzad”, described by police as one of the city’s top criminals, in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj.
Sunny, 34, was arrested during a special operation last night (30 October), according to a press release from Chattogram district police issued today.
According to the police’s preliminary investigation, Sunny is a close associate of Boro Sazzad. He had previously lived abroad before returning to Bangladesh and coming to Chattogram last year at Sazzad’s direction.
Police allege that Sunny has since been involved in various criminal activities, including extortion and physical assaults, on behalf of Boro Sazzad and Borhan.
District police said Sunny received a monthly salary of Tk50,000 from Boro Sazzad. He was also assigned to oversee extortion and other criminal activities in place of David Emon, who is currently in prison.
Police said members of the group attempted to extort money from individuals and businesspeople.
Preliminary investigations suggest that when victims refused to pay, or the group failed to collect the demanded money, local associates allegedly carried out armed attacks on their homes or business establishments at Sunny’s direction.
Two cases against Sunny are pending at Panchlaish and Hathazari police stations in Chattogram.
District detectives also obtained an audio recording of an incident involving an extortion demand and intimidation.
Police said they are examining the recording alongside other information and evidence.
An investigation is underway to establish Sunny’s direct and indirect involvement in extortion, identify his associates and determine the group’s activities.
District police said members of the group allegedly involved in extortion, intimidation and other criminal activities in Chattogram under the instructions of Boro Sazzad and David Emon have been going into hiding in other districts as police operations continue.
Intelligence operations are underway to identify them and bring them to justice, police added.
