A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice on the government demanding an immediate halt to renting out Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) buses to government ministries and institutions, saying the move would help ease the public transport crisis.
Lawyer Md Mahmudul Hasan sent the notice today (15 September) to the Cabinet secretary, secretaries of the road transport and bridges ministry and Finance Ministry, and the BRTC chairman.
The notice calls for all BRTC buses to be made available for public transport and asks government agencies to purchase their own buses or hire vehicles from private operators for official transportation.
It asks the authorities to take the necessary steps within 10 days and issue mandatory instructions to government institutions accordingly. The notice says the move would also contribute to strengthening the national economy.
The lawyer warned that he would file a writ petition with the High Court if the authorities fail to comply within the deadline.
The notice cited the need to protect citizens’ right to transportation and ensure the proper use of public resources amid the ongoing public transport crisis.
