A former administrative officer and registration assistant of Charramoni Mohon union parishad in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila has been accused of creating fake birth and death registrations for 74 non-existent children in an attempt to meet registration targets.
The allegation against Abul Bacher was substantiated during an investigation, following which he admitted to the offences in a written statement.
The Office of the Registrar General of Births and Deaths has ordered the withdrawal of Bacher’s authority as a registration assistant and directed that legal and administrative action be taken against him.
Bacher is currently working at Tumchar union parishad in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.
He allegedly created the fraudulent birth and death certificates at various times in 2025 while serving as the administrative officer and registration assistant at Char Ramani Mohan union parishad.
According to a letter issued by the Office of the Registrar General of Births and Deaths, 74 non-existent children in Charramoni Mohon union were registered in the Bangladesh Registration Information System (BDRIS) as having died within 45 days of birth.
An investigation found that Bacher, who was then serving as the registration assistant, was involved in the registrations.
The matter was confirmed in a letter signed on 9 September by Md Lutfur Rahman, deputy registrar general of Birth and Death Registration and a joint secretary.
Sources said Bacher appeared at the Office of the Registrar General of Births and Deaths on 27 August to provide an explanation regarding the incident. In his written statement, he admitted to creating the 74 fake birth and death registrations.
In the statement, Bacher said, “Due to excessive pressure to meet the target, I completed 74 birth and death registrations at various times in 2025. The registrations are not accurate. Therefore, I request that they be cancelled.”
Kathowai Prue Marma, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Lakshmipur Sadar, said, “The district commissioner will take administrative and legal action against him. Necessary action will be taken once the letter is received.”
