Kim Kardashian’s authorised biography comes out in a matter of days.
Writer and editor Jonathan Van Meter spent five years reporting and writing it. He interviewed her friends and family, spent time at her home and often went with her to shoots.
Recently, he shared what the process was like in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying Kardashian had one condition. She could read the manuscript to fact-check it.
Van Meter said nothing else was off limits. She took the job seriously. “She did her homework,” he said. She went through the book page by page and pointed out mistakes, such as a wrong date.
They later held a Zoom with two of her staff and a long phone call. That was when she questioned some parts, asking, “This part, really? Do we have to?” Van Meter said he told her they did.
She raised one big concern. It was about how he wrote about her late father, Robert Kardashian. She said the tone felt off.
Van Meter looked again and agreed. He said it was “a little snarky.” He said his father-in-law figure had been dead so long that he no longer felt real to him, but to Kardashian, he is still alive in her mind.
The book began in 2019, when Van Meter wrote a Vogue cover story about her. He said she called him from Bali at 3 a.m. after it came out. She told him there is no better feeling than when someone gets you.
He had told her he would write a book about her someday. The idea returned during the pandemic. Kardashian “was game.”
Both expected it to take two years, but somehow it went on for five years, but Kardashian remained committed.
