A Dhaka court today (6 October) placed Awami League leader and former Netrokona-1 MP Mustaque Ahmed Ruhi and former Mohammadpur Thana Awami League joint secretary Kabir Hossain on a four-day remand in a case over the killing of a man during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order after hearing the case.
Sub-Inspector Md Jahidul Islam Kabir, investigating officer of the case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station, had sought seven days’ remand for each accused.
According to the remand petition, police wanted to question them to recover the weapon allegedly used in the killing, identify and arrest absconding and unnamed accused, and gather further details about the incident.
State lawyer Omar Faruq Faruqui supported the remand, while defence lawyers including Mostafizur Rahman Talukder Dipu sought cancellation of the petition.
After hearing both sides, the court granted four days’ remand for each accused.
Police arrested Ruhi and Kabir from a residence in the Mohammadpur Police Station area on the afternoon of 23 September.
The following day, a court rejected their bail petitions and ordered that they be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, gunfire was opened on a peaceful procession of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 19 July 2024 in front of Oriental Covan Apartment beside Janani Courier Service in Bashbari under Mohammadpur Police Station.
At the time, courier service employee Raju Ahmed, 24, came out of his workplace and was watching the procession.
Around 4:30pm, Manager Shahadat was informed that Raju was lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.
Local residents took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Raju’s father filed a case over the incident with Mohammadpur Police Station on 27 August 2024.
