July martyrs will be remembered forever: Ctg mayor

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain has said the martyrs of the July Uprising will remain a lasting source of inspiration for the nation, with their sacrifices continuing to motivate the struggle for democracy, justice and people’s rights.

Speaking after laying wreaths at the July Memorial in Chattogram’s New Market area today (5 August), the mayor said, “The July martyrs are an inseparable part of our national history, and their ideals will continue to guide future generations.”

He said honouring the martyrs should go beyond ceremonies and be reflected in upholding their ideals.

Calling for national unity, Shahadat said the July Uprising was the result of collective sacrifices and urged everyone to build the country in the spirit of July, putting Bangladesh first.

The mayor said the martyrs’ sacrifices placed a greater responsibility on everyone to help build a humane, just and prosperous Bangladesh.

He added that the uprising had renewed the country’s democratic aspirations after years of political movements and repression.

He claimed BNP leaders and activists had long campaigned for democracy despite facing lawsuits and imprisonment.

Shahadat said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia remained committed to the people despite legal cases and imprisonment, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had supported the movement from the outset.

He also paid tribute to those killed in the July Uprising and prayed for the injured.
