JnU student Jobaed murder: Trial begins against 3 accused, testimony on 9 Dec

A Dhaka court has ordered the trial to begin against three accused in the murder of Jagannath University (JnU) student and Chhatra Dal leader Zobaed Hossain, set for 9 December to record witness testimony.

Judge Muhammad Mazharul Islam of the Dhaka 15th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court today (8 November) framed charges against the accused after rejecting their discharge petitions.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Ishtiaq Hossain Jipu confirmed the development and said the court rejected the discharge petitions of all three accused and ordered the trial to proceed.

The accused are Bargees Shabnam Barsha, 19, Zobaed’s student; Mahir Rahman, 19, Barsha’s boyfriend; and Fardeen Ahmed Aylan, 21, Mahir’s friend. All three accused are currently in jail. They were brought before the court from prison during the hearing.

According to the case statement, Zobaed Hossain was studying at Jagannath University while also working as a private tutor.

On 19 October 2025, Jobaed went to tutor Barsha at Roushan Villa, holding no 15 on Nur Box Lane in Ward 31 under Bangshal Police Station, at around 4:30pm.

At around 5:48pm, Barsha informed Saikat, a junior university student of Jobaed, through Messenger that Jobaed had been murdered by unidentified people. Around 7pm, Jagannath University student Md Kamrul Hasan informed Jobaed’s brother, Enayet Hossain, over the phone.

Enayet, accompanied by his brother-in-law Sharif Mohammad, reached Roushan Villa on a motorcycle at around 8:30pm. According to the case complaint, they noticed bloodstains on the stairs and walls as they climbed from the ground floor. They later found Jobaed’s bloodied body lying face down on the staircase on the eastern side of a room on the building’s third floor.

Earlier, police had recovered Jobaed’s blood-stained body from the staircase of a house on Panir Pump Goli. CCTV footage reportedly showed two young men fleeing the scene around the time of the murder, which police suspected had taken place at around 4:45pm. However, their faces were unclear.

Two days after the incident, on 21 October 2025, Jobaed’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station.

After nearly nine months of investigation, the case’s investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Ashraf Hossain of Bangshal Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on 30 June 2026.

The charge sheet named Barsha, her boyfriend Mahir Rahman and Mahir’s friend Fardeen Ahmed Aylan as accused. Investigators said the murder stemmed from a love triangle.
