India is interested in building people-centric relations with Bangladesh, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi told Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad today (2 September).
When Trivedi met Hafiz at the latter’s office in Dhaka, the speaker said Bangladesh-India relations have always progressed through various ups and downs.
He said the historic ties between the two countries have changed over time depending on circumstances.
Hafiz said the Awami League government undermined people’s democratic rights through staged elections of 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024.
He stated that the 2024 July Uprising paved the way for the restoration of democracy.
During Sheikh Hasina’s rule in that period, relations between India and Bangladesh were centred only on the governments, Hafiz remarked.
The speaker said people-to-people ties should be the foundation of Bangladesh-India relations, adding that the relationship should move forward based on mutual respect and the sovereignty and independence of both countries.
Trivedi said Delhi is interested in building people-centric relations between the two countries, adding that the current Indian government is working to fulfil people’s aspirations by rebuilding people-to-people relations.
During the meeting, they discussed parliamentary delegation visits, the Rohingya crisis and rehabilitation, and sports and cultural exchanges to expand bilateral relations.
The high commissioner also invited the speaker to visit India on behalf of the speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha.
He stressed the importance of exchanging parliamentary delegation visits between India and Bangladesh.
