Import and export activities at Bhomra Land Port in the district will remain suspended for seven consecutive days from today until October on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.
However, passport-holding passengers will be allowed to travel through the port as usual during the period. Commercial activities between Bangladesh and India will resume on 24 October.
According to the Bhomra Land Port C&F Agents Association, the decision was communicated through a letter from India’s Ghojadanga C&F Agents Cargo Welfare Association.
Abu Musa, general secretary of the Bhomra Land Port C&F Agents Association, said the Indian association had informed them in a letter that import and export activities would remain suspended for six days, from 17 October to 22 October, on the occasion of Durga Puja.
As 23 October falls on Friday, the weekly holiday in Bangladesh, the suspension will extend to seven days, he added.
ASI Shamim, acting officer-in-charge of Bhomra Immigration Police, said passport-holding passengers would be able to cross the border as usual despite the suspension of commercial activities.
