Illegal extraction of sand and stones from the Dahuk River in Panchagarh’s Tetulia has resumed, allegedly led by local influential Abu Taher and his cohorts, after he was released on bail.
Kazi Farms has filed a case against 40 named individuals, along with 70 unnamed people, accusing them of damaging the company’s land while transporting illegally extracted sand and stones.
Borhan, a representative of the organisation, filed the case with Tetulia Police Station on 30 September, Officer-in-Charge Md Laisur Rahman said, adding that action was being taken in this regard.
According to the company, a group broke boundary pillars at Khatapara Mouza in Buraburi Union on 28 September and forcibly entered its property to use the land as a route for transporting sand and stones from the river.
The company also alleged that the group displayed locally made weapons.
Police had earlier filed a case against Abu Taher on 22 June over alleged illegal extraction of sand and stones using dredgers. A court subsequently sent him to jail.
Kazi Farms said four more cases over alleged trespassing and vandalism are underway against him.
Ahmed Ali, general manager of the company’s Panchagarh office, said the illegal extraction and transportation have raised concerns over its security, property and environment.
Accused Taher and his cohorts could not be reached for comment.
