Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Husain today (24 October) ordered the transfer of a nurse for negligence of duty and a one-day salary deduction for four doctors who were absent from work without permission during a surprise visit to Fulbaria Upazila Health Complex in Mymensingh.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the minister said the government is working to bring the country’s healthcare sector to a level that meets public expectations and satisfaction, following the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He also said the government had taken steps to address longstanding problems in the health sector by improving hospital cleanliness, increasing medicine supplies and ensuring adequate stocks of saline.
The minister expressed hope that visible progress would be made in the health sector within the next few months.
He said the government planned to invite tenders worth several thousand crore taka within the next 15 days for the development and reconstruction of the health sector.
The funds would be spent on improving healthcare facilities across the country, including upazila health complexes, he added.
The government is also taking steps to set up modern pathology laboratories at upazila-level hospitals to expand diagnostic services in rural areas, the minister said.
