The High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has disposed of more than 50,000 old criminal miss cases within 11 working days as part of a special initiative to reduce case backlog and ensure speedy justice.
Fourteen Criminal Motion Benches of the High Court Division cleared 50,325 long-pending criminal miss cases during the drive, according to a press release issued today (6 August).
The benches disposed of another 6,968 old criminal miss cases, taking the total number of resolved cases under the initiative to 57,232, including both criminal miss and writ cases.
The special drive was launched under the direction of Chief Justice of Bangladesh to bring down the backlog of cases, expedite judicial proceedings and improve the efficiency of the justice system.
Judges of the Criminal Motion and Writ Motion Benches are carrying out the initiative by prioritising long-pending cases on designated days every week.
The initiative began on 7 May, when judges from the two divisions started reviewing and disposing of old cases as part of efforts to ensure quicker resolution for litigants.
