Police have detained the guardian of a sixth-grade student for allegedly entering a classroom and assaulting his son’s classmate at Rajdia Abhoy Pilot School and College in Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj.
The incident took place around 10am today (1 October) at the school in Ichapura union of the upazila.
A video of the alleged assault, in which the student was reportedly slammed to the floor, has also gone viral on social media.
According to police and school sources, students were in their sixth-grade classroom after a preparatory parade when Nahid Sheikh, father of sixth-grader Atikur Rahman, entered the classroom on suspicion that his son had been assaulted by his classmate Habib, 13.
Nahid allegedly grabbed Habib and slammed him to the floor three times inside the classroom.
The students present began screaming in fear, prompting teachers to rush to the classroom. The headteacher then took Nahid to his office and informed Sirajdikhan police.
Police later went to the school, detained Nahid and took him to the police station.
The incident has caused concern among students, teachers and guardians at the school.
Jahangir Alam, a guardian member of the school’s governing body, said two students had an altercation yesterday (30 September), following which the guardian of one student assaulted the other.
“It is very shameful that a guardian entered the classroom and assaulted a student instead of seeking a resolution from the headteacher. The guardian should not have done this,” he said.
Sirajdikhan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Alauddin confirmed the incident and said the accused guardian was being held at the police station. Legal action was being taken against him.
Sirajdikhan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rumpa Ghosh also said legal action was being taken over the incident.
