The government has reconstituted the board of directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, with Rumee A Hossain, sponsor director and chairman of the board executive committee of Bank Asia PLC, appointed as the new chairman.
The reconstitution was made through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism today (25 April).
According to the notification, the move has been carried out under Articles 37 and 38 of the airline’s Articles of Association, in line with the Companies Act 1994.
The newly formed board comprises senior government officials, representatives from the armed forces, as well as financial sector leaders and corporate professionals.
Other members of the board include Dr Md Khairuzzaman Majumder, secretary of the Finance Division; Fahmida Akhter, secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism; Air Vice Marshal Javed Tanveer Khan of the Bangladesh Air Force; and Major General Md Hasan Uz Zaman of the Bangladesh Army.
The board also includes Barrister Nasir Uddin Ahmed Asim; M Masrur Reaz of Policy Exchange Bangladesh; Sharif Zahir of United Commercial Bank; Mohammad Abdur Rahim of DBL Group; Md Mamunur Rashid, former president of ICMAB; Barrister Khairul Alam Chowdhury; Professor Abu Naser Ahmed Ishtiaque of the University of Dhaka; and Kaiser Sohel Ahmed, managing director and CEO of Biman (ex-officio).
The reconstituted board will take effect immediately following approval by the competent authority, the notification added.
Officials expect the move to strengthen corporate governance and support the national carrier’s efforts to improve operational efficiency, expand its fleet and enhance service standards.
