Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today (3 August) said the government is simultaneously making legal and diplomatic efforts to repatriate former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“Alongside the legal process, the government is actively engaging diplomatic channels to facilitate his return to Bangladesh,” he said.
Responding to a question from journalists at the Secretariat, the minister said Benazir Ahmed has been granted conditional bail by a UAE court, which bars him from leaving the country.
He said the government has already instructed its appointed law firm in the UAE to obtain a certified copy of the court’s order and immediately file a petition seeking cancellation of the bail.
“The necessary documents for his formal repatriation are also being prepared for submission to the court,” the minister said.
Ahmed added that the government suspects the former police chief may possess passports from multiple countries, a factor being taken into account in its legal strategy.
