The government has taken plans to raise the Chattogram–Dohazari railway line by around five feet, announced State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid today (8 July).
He made the remarks while inspecting flood-affected sections of the railway as days of heavy rainfall left sections of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line submerged, forcing the suspension of train services.
Speaking to reporters at Chattogram Railway Station, he said the government intends to raise the approximately 47-kilometre Chattogram–Dohazari line by around five feet to improve its resilience against flooding.
He said the upgraded line would remain operational even if floodwaters rose by two to three feet, helping maintain rail connectivity during periods of heavy rainfall.
“The tender process for the project is currently underway. Once construction begins, we hope it will bring a lasting solution to the long-standing difficulties faced by people in this region,” the state minister added.
Habibur also outlined the government’s broader plans to modernise the railway network, saying efforts are under way to upgrade existing infrastructure, build new railway lines, and increase the number of locomotives and passenger coaches.
He added that a feasibility study is being carried out for a new direct (chord) railway line on the Dhaka–Chattogram route.
“If implemented, the project will shorten the Narayanganj–Cumilla section by around 80 kilometres and reduce journey times by approximately one hour and 20 minutes,” he said.
Earlier yesterday, train services on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route remained suspended after heavy rain submerged sections of the railway track, leaving around 1,000 passengers stranded for hours.
He also mentioned that those who bought tickets from counter or via online will get back the money as per rules.
