Govt plans new housing project for financially distressed freedom fighters

The government is planning to take up a new project to provide housing for financially distressed freedom fighters and their families, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Aazam Khan told parliament today (30 August).

He disclosed the plan in a written reply to a question from Kushtia-4 MP Md Afzal Hossain during the question-answer session. The parliamentary session was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

The minister said the Liberation War Affairs Ministry plans to formulate an updated project titled ‘Construction of Housing for Insolvent Freedom Fighters’ for the welfare of freedom fighters and their families.

Once the project is formulated, housing units will be allocated to freedom fighters under the initiative, he said.

At present, 101 housing units have been allocated to freedom fighters and their families in two upazilas of Kushtia under the ‘Construction of Housing for Insolvent Freedom Fighters (First Revised)’ project.

Of the total, 69 homes have been allocated in Kumarkhali upazila and 32 in Khoksa upazila, the minister said.

Two freedom fighters’ complex buildings have also been constructed – one each in Kumarkhali and Khoksa – under the ‘Construction of Upazila Freedom Fighters’ Complex Buildings’ project, he added.

Regular allocations are also being provided to the health complexes in the two upazilas for the medical treatment of freedom fighters and collaborators of the Liberation War, the minister said.

He said the allocations were being made in line with the ‘Expenditure Policy for 4% of Hat and Market Lease Revenue, 2025’ and relevant circulars, in the same manner as for other government hospitals.

The funds are used to provide medical services to freedom fighters, he said.

The minister added that further allocations are provided once a fresh demand is submitted along with statements detailing expenditure of the previously allocated funds.
